In tegenstelling tot wat men misschien zou verwachten, tonen recente studies aan dat wanneer de werkloosheid stijgt, het sterftecijfer afneemt. Dit zou onder meer komen doordat mensen minder stress ondervinden op hun werk en er minder fatale auto-ongelukken plaatsvinden. Voor Nederland is deze associatie nog niet specifiek onderzocht en deze studie onderzoekt met provinciale data over de periode van 1996 tot en met 2013 wat de relatie in Nederland is. Deze studie vindt ook bewijs voor een procyclische associatie: wanneer de werkloosheid met één procentpunt stijgt, neemt het totale sterftecijfer met 0,27 procent af
